Add color to wood with watercolor pencils and alcohol. Watercolor pencils are a no muss no fuss way to give this already pretty picture frame an added layer of depth. Though typically used for watercolor techniques on paper, these pencils work very well on wood. Coloring helps the brain to disconnect and focus on the moment. Wood-burning is relaxing too and putting the two techniques together makes for wonderful results. The secret to getting great results on wood is using alcohol instead of water. Alcohol dissipates and does not penetrate the wood or raise the wood fibers. This gives you a smooth clean finish. Additionally, you can choose to seal the wood frame with an acrylic clear coat, Mod Podge or varnish. I use a spray so the colors do not run.
Supplies used to add color to wood:
- Derwent Inktense Watercolor Pencils
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Paint Brush
- White paint marker
To add color to a wood-burning
- Select your desired colors for your design and color in the images. The Inktense pencils will look like regular pencils.
- Now the magic begins! When alcohol is added to the color it turns into a thick color and penetrates the wood fibers.
- Add tiny details using a white paint marker.
