How to carve stamps a fun craft idea for teens. They can explore their creativity when making the stamps and then the real fun begins when the stamps are used to make cards, decoratw journals and embellish other works of art.
Imagination, a few erasers and a carving set are all you need to make your own hand carved stamps. I have never carved my own stamps before and I thought it would be hard to do because I have limited hand strength. It really was not. The erasers were soft and the cutting blades cut through them with little effort. The blades are very sharp and I would not let children do this unless properly supervised.
The leave stamps are a part of a monthly link party so be sure to visit the other bloggers.
Supplies used to hand carve stamps and homemade cards:
- X-Acto Carving set
- Factis Eraser
- Cardstock
- Ink Pad
- Blank Cards and Envelopes
- Pen or Pencil
Directions to carve stamps:
To get started, draw a line on one eraser.
Cut the eraser in half so it can be used for smaller images. I used the smaller pieces to make rain drops, leaves, stems, tree branches and flower stamps.
I wanted to make a stamp that looks like striped washi tape. You can see where I drew the lines and carved out the open area. I used a variety of the carving tips to carve each stamp. The tip to use first is the straight blade. I use it to cut an outline around the stamp before I carve out the excess.
The other carved stamps that I created:
To make the cards, you will need to ink the stamps. I like to do a test stamp the first time I use a new stamp. You can tell if there are any uneven spots and you can make sure you have even ink coverage.
When carving letters into stamps make sure you carve them backwards. You can hold it in a mirror to make sure you draw them correctly.
To give the same stamp the appearance of different lengths, stamp off the edge of the card. The Washi Tape stamp is the same length on both sides. But by staggering the amount of stamp shown on the paper it gives it a variety of lengths.
After the leaf stamps were carved, I took a bit off of the edges to give it a more rustic look.
I hope you have enjoyed looking at the hand carved stamps and the clean and simple cards created with them. $6 dollars worth of erasers and I have 20 very unique stamps. I am sure you will see them in future projects.

WOW! how cool is this. The only way I’ve known to make a stamp is with a potato haha, like preschool times. This is worth pinning.
