DIY Haunted House a Spooktacular Creation

Make a DIY Haunted House. I hope you think it’s a SPOOKTACULAR Creation! Do you think it looks a little like the Bates House from Psycho? Do you think Mr. Hitchcock would approve?

I did see the Bates house once at Universal Studios, it’s really creepy! My DIY Haunted House is a little bit smaller, and made entirely of paper, ink, and adhesive. It’s not really that scary…

The roof comes off the attic to reveal a box for storing candy or treats.

 

There is a large opening in the back that folds down so you can fill with extra treats or a fun surprise. You can also put battery operated tea lights inside. The windows are left open, but would look great with vellum too.

The base is constructed of a navy cardstock with an orange peel texture. This is inked with Versa Magic® Cloud White and Jumbo Java Ink, Cosmic Copper BRILLIANCE Ink applied with Fantastix Applicators and ink Blushers™ from Imagine Crafts. The textured pieces were cut from a smooth black cardstock that was embossed with a folder from Spellbinders paper arts, and also inked. The center section of the house and the background behind the doors were cut from My Minds’ Eye patterned paper that was inked with Jumbo Java Versa Magic® Ink.

TIP: If the piece you are embossing is larger than your folder, choose something with a repeating pattern. Start on on side, and align by overlapping a bit and repeat as necessary.

The accent pieces like windows and doors were also cut from smooth black cardstock and inked. To add some of the details around the attic windows and to the roof, a Fantastix Applicator was used around the edges and along score lines. The three colors together have a fun distressed effect on the house.

ArtGlitter Dries Clear Designer Glue is perfect for working with paper as it dries clear and not shiny, so any small bits left over will not be seen. The trick to a large piece like this is to take your time, and really make sure each piece is well glued before moving on.
