A Dresser makeover – Furniture Flippin’

A DIY dresser makeover. I like to paint and furniture is one of my favorite substrates to paint upon. If I can find old pieces with great detail I am very happy. This piece was found at a St Vincent De Paul when my friend Pam and I went looking for a few pieces for her dining room. A soon as we saw this piece we were sold. We knew it had great bones and was well made. It was not a question of if we were getting the piece it was who gets to be the one to take it home. Well somehow I was snookered into taking it home painting it for her. And that is okay, because Pam is so hard working and goes out of her way to help so many people and is often under appreciated. I thought it would be nice to do a little something extra for her.

Then I decided to enter it in a contest called The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest with the theme of “icing on the cake”.

I picked my “icing” the clear glass knobs  from  d lawless hardware.   They have a wide assortment of knobs pulls, lighting and other makeover items that are high quality and reasonably priced.

The contest is organized by the gals above. I plan on entering more of their monthly contests because painting furniture makes me happy. Michelle’s posted a Homework Cubby to her site that is very creative. Evey posted a buffet to her site that is charming.

Supplies for the Dresser makeover

• Vinegar/water mix old cloth
• Decoart Chalky Finish paint– Treasure, New Life
• Chalky Finish- Clear Creme Wax, Dark Brown Creme Wax
• Decoart Two inch round bristle brush
• Sand paper

Instructions for the dresser makeover:

Clean the piece inside and out with a vinegar water solution and an old cloth. Remove drawers to paint separately.  You can use wax or vaseline to cover small areas where you want paint or wood to show through.

Paint on green paint in the areas you want it to pop through.

Cover the piece in blue paint.  Sand any rough or thick spots. Sand off spots where you would like to highlight.  I painted the metal handles but added crystal knobs to set off the details in the wood work.  They were my “icing” on top.

You can see a close up of the glass knobs that were sent to me.  I also ordered a few more knobs to be used on my next projects.  I really enjoy bringing new furniture to life and that fact that Pam found 3 more pieces on our shopping trip I know I am going to be busy for a while. I have two pieces but I guess they will have to wait until I finish hers first.
