Super Hot Wire Foamcutter- And another Giveaway
Its time to shake your money maker and make this super simple money holder for a grad or any other occasion…
I used Marvy’s Super Hot Wire Foam cutter to create this bird that proudly displays cash and gives you a chance to give those cash gifts a little more creatively that your standard money holder card. Read on for directions on how I made this little cutie and how you can win a Paper Trimming Buddy from Marvy Uchida!
I used the Super Hotwire Foamcutter cutting tool to cut 1″ thick Styrofoam into a bird shape. If you would like the bird template, leave me a comment b y clicking here and I will email it to you. Leaving a comment also enters you a chance to win the prize.
I got the idea after I remembered conducting a Make it Take it project for Marvy Uchida at a CHA Show a few years ago. We made sweet candy shakers for Valentines Day.
We filled them with pink and red jelly beans and added a poem about “love seeds.” Everyone seemed to love making them. For complete instructions on these, ciick here.
I started the bird project by creating a bird template from heavy cardstock. When cutting with this tool, i like to use template to guide the wire since it doesn’t cut into paper or cardstock, only foam based products. I used a Clever Lever Circle punch to create a circle in the middle of the bird.
Now it is time to secure your template to the foam. I like to use sequin pins because they don’t seem to be too long and interfere when I am cutting the shape,
The wire glides along so nicely as it cuts the shape, it is very addictive!
Now you’ll want to chose some patterned paper to cover your bird with. I chose simple black and white but the sky is the limit. Trace a bird back and front on the wrong side of the paper and cut out.
So we will not have any exposed white foam showing through the sides, color your bird completely using Marvy’s DecoColorin Black. You will also want to color a two 2″ teardrop shapes and two 1/2″ teardrop shapes (like woodsies) with white DecoColor. This will be the wings and the beaks. Additionally, color a standard sized wood skewer so your bird will have a handle.
Now you wi ill glue the patterned paper cut out to the foam bird. If needed, use scissors to trim the paper even with the bird.
Cut out a piece of transparency that will cover the circle on the bird. Apply glue to the edges and place over the open circle on the “front” of the bird. This will hold the money in place.
Punch a scalloped edged circle using Marvy’s Clever Lever Mega punch from black glittered cardstock. Punch one circle from a scrap of cardstock using the Clever Lever Super Jumbo Circle punch and trace in center of scalloped edged circle. Glue this to the front of the bird.
Use stamps and ink or rub ons, stickers, etc for grad year on front wing. For the back of the bird, trace a circle slightly larger than the opening on the bird. Instead of gluing this circle on, apply with glue dots so the grad will be able to remove the money without destroying the bird.
Finally, finsh your bird by gluing the pieces in place. Insert the painted skewer into a thick portion of the bird so it will hold steady. Remove it and place glue on the end and reinsert.
Other than money for a grad, what other occasion would you use this project for and what would you put in the bird? Leave me a comment by on my blog by clicking here. Leave your comment by Tuesday, May 31st, 12 AM CST and I will choose a winner at random to win a Marvy Uchida Paper Trimming Buddy (US residents only please).
