Fabric ATCs by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer’s for New Friend Friday! We have a stellar project to celebrate Spring and it is brought to you by a mixed media artist from NYC, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. Recently, I met Julie at the CHA Winter show in Los Angeles. Her original works of art are full of color and invoke many emotions. She has a fantastic blog and is quite inspirational and after seeing her project I want to try watercolor on fabric. The colors on her project are so vibrant. You should stop by her blog and see the other ATCs that are on display.
Each week I send questions out to our guests. I love reading their responses and I hope you do too. If there are ever any questions you would like to ask, please send an email to nikimeiners@365daysofcrafts.com Now lets check out the wonderful work of our New Friend Julie Fei-Fan Balzer.
Hi! My name is Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and I’m a mixed media artist living in New York City. I wanted to share some fabric ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) with you today.
DIY watercolor fabric & freestyle stitched Fabric ATCs:
To make my fabric ATCs I started with muslin and stitched a flower pattern.
Then I painted the flower pattern with acrylic paint and a lot of water and I do this so that the paint would bleed everywhere.
Then I cut the large piece into 2.5″x3.5″ ATC size pieces.
I stitched around the edges, over-dyed some of the remnants from the original piece, and embellished each of the ATCs with the over-dyed remnants. Click on the images below to make them larger.

Q. What is your favorite Medium?
A. Don’t have a favorite – guess that’s why I’m a mixed media gal!
Q. Are you trained or self taught?
A. Self-taught.
Q. One interesting fact that our readers might want to know?
A. I’m teaching an online mixed media stitch class called “It’s Sew Easy” where you’ll learn everything from how to sew in a straight line to how to paint with your sewing machine needle! It’s six weeks long and starts at the end of March.
Q. Where do you find inspiration?
A. Everywhere! On the streets of NYC, in a magazine, from a conversation, during a visit to a museum, or simply from my art supplies!
Q. What is your favorite color scheme?
A. I’m very obsessed with using just the three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow.
Q. Do you work sitting down or standing up?
A. I alternate sitting and standing. I primarily sit, but to get a better vantage point or leverage, sometimes I need to stand!
