Playdough party favors add a colorful burst to any party and what would a birthday party be without fun party favors? Instead of the usual plastic trinkets and candy often passed out my daughter and I decided on a little something handmade to give out at the end of her party.
We made kool-aid play dough, divided each recipe into 1/4ths, packaged it up in little 4oz. plastic containers like Gladware containers, wrapped in strips of cute papers and a handwritten label on the top. Easy, fast, and so fun! And I’ve heard from several friends that their kids love it too!
If you don’t want to go the handwritten message way you can seal the containers with washi tape. You can get themed to match your party, solid colors or just toss a bunch out on a table and let the kids go willy nilly.

- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 cup salt
- 2 Tbsp cream of tartar
- 1 envelope unsweetened Koolaid or a variety of flavors/colors
- 1 cup of water
- 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
Supplies for playdough storage:
- Gladware or zip-top baggies
- Washi tape for a decorative seal
Instructions for the dough:
NOTE – PLEASE supervise children when making this dough and when playing with it.
- Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, Koolaid and water in a medium saucepan. Stir in oil.
-
Mix over medium heat for 3-5 minutes until the mixture forms a ball in the center of the pan. The dough will start darkening in color.
-
Remove from pan {caution: will be HOT}. Knead until soft.
-
Store in an airtight container or zip-top bag.
-
Licking is optional
Note: a variety of Koolaid flavors were used ~ fruit punch {red}, orange {orange}, lemonade {yellow}, lemon-lime {green}, berry blue {blue}, grape {purple}, pink lemonade {pink}. The lemonade was the only one that I added a few drops of food coloring too so it was a little brighter in color.

What a fun idea! I’ll bet the kids had a blast and probably snacked on the play dough, too!
