Create Rustic Christmas Plaid table decor

Rustic Chic Christmas Plaid Style – not quite sure that means but that is what I am calling my Christmas decorations this year.  No, I am not starting all over for my Christmas theme but since we are in a new house I am choosing to add a few more pieces.  Luckily I tend to go with the classics and can add the trendy pieces to them.  When we were first married 1997 I registered for personalized stockings from Pottery Barn in red and green velvet.  Way back then I had my life planned out and ordered extra so that when we had a dog and two kids they would all coordinate.  Luckily I have two kids and a dog and we all have matching stockings.  I will admit my 5-year-old does not have her name on hers yet.  Maybe this will be the year that I do it.

I made napkin ring holders, decorated candle sticks, made a plaid table runner and chair covers. The table runner is 12 inches by the length of my table.  I fringed the edges. I also made a tree centerpiece that I will give directions to in another post.  

Materials for Rustic Christmas Deer Plaques and Plaid Chair Covers:

• Napkin Rings
• Jute Cording
• DecoArt Paint in Gold, Brown, Smitten Chalky Finish Paint
• Sand paper
• Sculpey Primo Polymer Clay in Brown and Green
• Mystical Forest Mold from Plaid.
• Plaid material
• Jute bags
• Scissors
• Sewing machine and thread

To make the Rustic Christmas Clay embellishments:

1. Condition the clay and press the clay into the mold.  Remove the branches and deer from the mold VERY CAREFULLY and bake according to manufacturer’s directions.  Repeat this step for the number of sets you need.    Allow the polymer clay pieces to cool.  The sanding of edges gives it a more rustic feel.
   
2. Paint small disk gold and allow to dry.  Lightly sand off edges.
3. Paint larger disk brown and sand off edges.
4. Hot Glue pieces together. 
   
   
5. Adhere polymer clay pieces to the top. 
6. Prop pieces up while glue cools.

Napkin ring base:

The napkin rings were from the thrift store, a set of 8 metal rings for a dollar.  The metal rings were coated with the Chalky Finish Paint in Smitten with a dash of Heritage blended together.  The chalk paint holds better on the metal than traditional acrylic paint. Apply a lite coat of Creme Wax to seal the colors.   Wrap jute string around the rings and Adhere the plaques with the hot glue gun. You can be as messy as you want since a Rustic Christmas theme lends itself to the distressed look.

Tip – A high temp glue gun with a nozzle works well when adhering mixed materials and small parts.  (low temp will not work they pop off)

To make the Rustic Plaid Chair covers:

1. The jute bags I found just happened to be the exact size of my chair backs.  I cut the drawstring portion off the jute bags and added a strip of the plaid fabric.  I used red thread to sew it on the jute.
2. Jute tassels were added and hand stitched on.
3. Hot glue the deer plaques on the center of the hair cover.This is the rustic Christmas tree centerpiece I made.  I will do a separate post on it since there is a fun technique involved in making the base.  I use a Faux Bois technique that turned out pretty cool.
   
4.
